"A Narrative on Various Interests"

Library of Congress Photo Archives on Flickr

Posted by Joe Burnett on Saturday, January 19th, 2008 at 8:49 am

While catching up this morning on reading the posts at the KERA Arts + Culture Blog I discovered an entry describing how the Library of Congress has signed up for a Flickr account and is posting thousands of photos from its archives.

Most of the current photos that have been posted date from the 1910’s, 1930’s, and 1940’s. What I find the most interesting are the color photos from the World War II era. Here are some of the images I really enjoyed.

It’s impossible for me to pick a favorite among all of these wonderful photographs. I really love the one below. It makes me wonder… Who were they? Did he manage to survive the war? Did they marry and have kids? Are they still living? In a word – poignant.

Posted by Joe Burnett on Thursday, December 20th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

More Paul Potts news! I really like this guy! I must have missed the news that his appearance in front of the queen at the Royal Variety Performance had already taken place.

What a success story he is. His debut album, One Chance, has already sold around 2 million copies worldwide, and it is one of my favorites.

Here is the video of his spectacular appearance at the 2007 Royal Variety Performance. If you haven’t purchased his album already, buy it! You won’t regret it!

Paul Potts Album Available for Pre-Order

Posted by Joe Burnett on Friday, July 13th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

One evening last month, Michelle and I sat in front of our TV and watched YouTube videos via a newly released feature on our Apple TV. As I described in an earlier post, we happened to watch a clip of Paul Potts and his initial performance on the British TV show Britain’s Got Talent. We were totally amazed at the voice that he has, as were the other millions of people that have heard him since his debut! That night, we became instant fans of the singer, and enjoyed watching the other YouTube videos that chronicle his achievement of winning the contest. His appearance on NBC’s Today Show was very entertaining. There’s just something about this guy that you can’t help but like.

Well, I am happy to pass the word along to everyone that his first album, titled Paul Potts: One Chance, is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The album will ship on July 30th, so hurry and pre-order your copy now!

iphone.jpgGear Live has a pretty interesting article on how to use on the new Apple iPhone. The method uses the Mac IRC client Colloquy. There’s a step-by-step guide in the article on how to get it up and running. If you are one of the lucky technogeeks that got an iPhone and can’t live without IRC access be sure and check it out.

Paul Potts – Opera Singer

Posted by Joe Burnett on Thursday, June 21st, 2007 at 7:42 am

No, I’m not referring to the mass murderer Pol Pot. But wow… just…. wow! Michelle and I were watching some YouTube videos on the Apple TV to “test” the new functions and came across the amazing videos of the winner of the British TV show “Britain’s Got Talent”. He’s an amateur opera singer that just got his big break in life. It’s an amazing story – check him out for yourself.

Former Circuit City Employee Tells All

Posted by Joe Burnett on Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 at 7:55 am

I found an interesting article supposedly written by a former employee claiming there are shady sales tactics that go on at Circuit City. I have plenty of personal horror stories to tell about that “other” retail store, but this one is hard to believe. I have never had a bad experience when dealing with Circuit City. As most of my friends and family know, I usually encourage them to shop there!

One useful tip from the posting:

If you do get an extended warranty (Circuit City Advantage Protection Plan), push for a lower rate. Nearly half of the cost is profit, so if you’re buying a 2 year plan for you laptop that’s running you say 200 bones, you could easily talk them down to 170, possibly 150.

Now this one…. I’m not quite so sure about:

Every salesman is ranked by the number of protection plans (or extended warranties) that they sell. At my store all the time we would throw on scratch protection plans to CD’s, since they’re only a buck, most people don’t notice. During the $9.99 CD special days, customers who weren’t aware of the sale were easy prey.

Hmmm…. that last one sounds more like some other store to me.
